A few months back, we had the chance to review the Otterbox “Strength” case for the Blackberry Curve. Everyone we showed it to loved the color, and was wondering when it would be available for their device. Unfortunately, only 3 devices can wear this lovely case (all Blackberry devices): the Curve 8500, the Pearl 9100, and now, the Bold 9700.

From the Otterbox website:

“When you purchase the OtterBox Commuter Series “Strength” case for BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700, 10% of the purchase price will be donated to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.

Last Thursday, the Blackberry Torch 9800 was released into the wild. As the admitted gadget freak that I am, I proceeded to ensure that I had one first thing that morning. So, I went down to my local AT&T Store and waited for them to open. Unlike the throngs of people that lined up hours before the iPhone 4 and predecessors were released, most people apt to purchase the Torch are business folk. Thus, they show up a few minutes before the store opens. There were actually several people like myself, who absolutely have to have the latest and greatest.

I was first in the door. And that store’s first Torch sale. I had it in my hands within 5 minutes of the store opening. Within 15 minutes, I was out the door and on my way. But not before they handed me a pen and a t-shirt for being their first sale of the Torch… oh, and a picture of me with my new hardware.

The unit came in a minimized box, and included:

AC “Cube” adapter

USB Cable (That also doubles for charging via the adapter or USB port)

Quick-Start guide

Safety and Product Information

Stereo Headphones

Desktop Software CD

The unit came with a 25% or so charge, so it was usable immediately. That said, as soon as I got to my desk, it was plugged in to my laptop for charging, while I transferred the data from my Bold 9700 onto Blackberry Desktop 6, and then down to the Torch. That was painless. Transferring apps was another matter, due to the differences between OS 5 (on the Bold 9700) and OS 6 (on the Torch). I decided after 3 errors to not install the apps via the transfer tool, but to do it manually. This has the added positive of allowing me to selectively check compatibility before installing, which I have been doing.

The hardware has been designed eloquently. While it still has the typical Blackberry form factor, it is slightly larger than the Bold 9700. The slider for the screen is smooth and has no “jerk”, so typical of other sliders out there. It snaps into its open position with little fanfare. The orientation detection is sound, albeit a bit slow, depending on the application that is running at the time. The keyboard has the solid feel of the 9700, but is recessed a bit more, due to the screen slider. Quality of the screen is good. My 46+ years eyes can still detect a slight blur to the fonts, but it is very slight. The touchscreen sensitivity (which is adjustable) is preset at a level that will probably be fine for most people, including this author.

The first time the unit is run, it has a cute demo, clearly addressed to business users, but which shows some of the capabilities of the device and the operating system. Once over, you never have to see it again, but if you want to, it is still there for re-runs.

The battery cover seems a bit flimsy, but it slides into place well. The SIM card and micro SD card are easily accessible without having to pull the battery, or try and use forceps to remove (This was one of the biggest peeves I had on the Bold 9700… The micro SD card was incredibly hard to remove). The buttons on the front of the unit are flush with the unit, and all one piece. Initially, you would think that they are touch sensitive. But they are separate buttons underneath the top plastic. They work well, and provide the needed feedback that tells you that it was pressed.

RIM did not include a case with the unit. I would suggest that anyone purchasing a Torch immediately purchase a case to protect the unit. Mine stayed barren for about 24 hours while I ogled over it, but fear of dropping and scarring my new baby got to me, and I purchased a slider case (That review will be coming soon).

A more in-depth review of the Torch will be forthcoming, folk! This gadget freak is still playing…

As many of you know, we were the victims of a vindictive spammer and his friend, who decided to tag our site. Although they were captured and are facing criminal prosecution, the damage to our site and many others was done. We made a difficult decision to wipe out past articles, as they literally posted hundreds of thousands of comments on our articles. It was unfortunate, but we felt we had no choice. We do have the old articles, and will be re-posting them in time, once we can be assured that the comments are stripped. This may be a long-time manual operation (possibly for one of our students… we know they can use the money!).

As a caterpillar emerges as a butterfly, we are using this as an opportunity to improve the site. Please watch how we change for the better!
