Hands Free Use Required In California

As of 12:01 AM today, all drivers in California 18 years of age and older must use a hands free option with their cell phones. Those under 18 are not allowed to use a cell phone while driving at all. Bluetooth sales have been notably higher in this past week, with many shelves at some stores, such as Walmart, pretty much cleared out. Cellular company stores have also seen increased sales.

Polaroid Film... R.I.P.

Polaroid has announced it is closing its MA plant, and getting out of the film business. Got one of those instant cameras? Its about to become a brick. Turns out Polaroid stopped making the cameras during the last two years, and today put the final nail in the coffin of instant film. This after they killed the Kodak Instant camera (I happened to own on of these... the Kodak film peeled off the developer for a true "flat" instant picture, unlike the Polaroid film that kept that little bubble at the bottom. They did this by the method most companies quash others... lawsuit. Bleh...

Anyhow, Polaroid is apparently looking to license the instant photo technology to another company, in the hopes that the instant film industry can be kept alive. Stay tuned, folks...

What? iPod users want *gasp* MUSIC?

In this article from Reuters, Nielson Media Research determined that less than 1% of content items played by iPod users on either iTunes or the device itself were videos. Among video iPod users, that percentage barely improves, up to 2.2%.

So, for those *power* users out there, even they are not making a dent in the video market on their iPods. Some food for thought.

Some Airlines to Offer iPod Seat Connections

Six airlines, including Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, will offer passengers iPod seat connections by the middle of next year. The connections will power and charge iPods during flight and allow travelers to view the video content on seat-back displays.

Update: Apparently, earlier announcements on some other sites also said that KLM and Air France were also going to offer iPod connections in seats. This may not be the case. According to VNUNET.COM, KLM and Air France have denied a statement by Apple claiming that the two airlines will offer iPod integration in their aircrafts.

Hugo Baas, a spokesperson for KLM, told vnunet.com that the airline so far has had just "exploratory conversations" with Apple and denied that the two companies had any agreement.

Air France on Tuesday sent out a press release contradicting the Apple release.

Best Buy rescinds pre-order offer for PlayStation 3

via Associated Press

Best Buy Co., which briefly offered customers the chance to pre-order the new Sony PlayStation 3, said the offer was a mistake and has been rescinded, according to a report.

KSTP-TV reported Monday that thousands of customers who pre-ordered the video game console after seeing the offer on the company's Web site Nov. 4 have been notified through e-mail that their orders won't be honored. Instead, they will receive $10 coupons.

Best Buy said in its e-mails that the offer was posted on its Web site by mistake for about two hours, the station reported. The company apologized for the mistake.

The Better Business Bureau said it received 108 complaints about the rescinded offer in one day alone.

The much-awaited PS3 comes out Friday in the U.S. The system starts at $500 for a 20 GB version while the price tag on the 60 GB model is $600.

Cingular to Offer New Smartphone - "Blackjack"

Samsung's Blackjack, the newest in the smartphone arsenal, will be offered here in the U.S. by Cingular. This little unit is only 1/2" thick, 320x320 pixel display, 1.3 megapixel camera, and QWERTY keyboard. It will run Windows Mobile 5, have 5.5 hours of talk time, 11 DAYS of standby, and will sell for around $200 (on the usual 2 year committment).

Is it a Treo killer? We will have to see. Now that both the 680 and 750 have FCC approval, it looks like Cingular will be marketing many smartphones in the next few weeks.
